United's youthful exuberance was not enough against Wednesday's vast experience in the reserve derby at Worksop Town's Sandy Lane ground.

The Owls named no less than seven players with first team experience for Wednesday evening's game, whilst the Blades fielded, predominantly, an under 18s side. Despite the scoreline, coach Kevin Fogg drew positives from the performance.

Afterwards he said: "We are proud of the lads, they battled hard, tried to take the game to Wednesday and will learn from playing against more experienced opposition.

"We saw more of the ball in both halves but were chasing the game after conceding two cheap goals. However, we didn't let our heads drop and kept playing the right way."

In the opening five minutes United had a chance to take the lead but Boden was unable to get a clean connection to a shot after a mix-up between Watson and goalkeeper Burch. Wednesday took advantage of the let off to net the game's first goal on 12 minutes.

Binnion was penalised for a foul on Johnson and as Blades goalkeeper Ho Lee was lining up his wall, O'BRIEN was allowed to curl a free-kick into the bottom corner.

Wednesday added a second with their next attack on 21 minutes. Johnson tricked his way through the United defence and provided a perfect cross for WALLWORK to head beyond Ho Lee's right hand.

Walker fired over a first-time half-volley for United, whilst Wednesday came close to adding a third on the stroke of half-time when Johnson fired in a 30-yard free-kick but Ho Lee was well-placed to save.

Twice in the second half Eagers broke through the midfield but was unable to test Burch, whilst United were continuing to look good on the approach to Wednesday's penalty area.

However, the visitors added a third on 62 minutes to confirm their victory. Johnson beat the offside trap and rounded Ho Lee before pulling the ball back for BODEN to score with the assistance of the crossbar, despite the attentions of Lowton.

Late on Tahar fired over after a good move and Ho Lee was forced to push away a long range effort from Wallwork. Chances were sparse late on and United comfortably held out late on to ensure that Wednesday could not avenge the 4-0 success the Blades recorded at Hillsborough earlier this season, also in the Pontin's League.
