The Blades remain top of the Pontin's League Eastern Section after Jon Stead's second half goal accounted for York City on Wednesday evening.

On a mild night at the Don Valley Stadium, United's experienced second string stretched the impressive unbeaten start to the season to seven games.

The woodwork came to the rescue of both teams in the first half hour. First, Bennett, on his 36th birthday, pushed an effort from Topkle on to the crossbar and then Webber saw his half-volley, from the edge of the box, strike the post after a short corner routine.

Another speculative effort from the dangerous Topkle forced Bennett into a save and before the break York threatened again but Brodie's long-range free-kick from a central position was comfortable for the goalkeeper.

United created the first chance of the second period but Lucketti's header from a Ross corner was just wide. The home side, however, opened the scoring on 59 minutes.

From Ashmore's ball down the left flank, a back header was mis-placed and seized upon by STEAD, who progressed to the edge of the penalty area before side-footing past goalkeeper Mimms - the son of former stopper Bobby.

United's goalkeeper Bennett was ever-alert and saved point-blank from Topkle on 71 minutes - it proved to be York's final effort.

The Blades had a couple of opportunities to extend the winning margin in the closing minutes but Horsfield headed over from another Ross delivery and then Stead saw his left-footer saved by Mimms.

Coach Ron Reid was pleased with the final outcome, he said: "We shaded it and deserved the victory. We kept a clean sheet and all the senior lads managed to get another 90 minutes under their belts."
