Christian Nade found the net and was later sent off as United's Reserves beat local rivals Barnsley 1-0 at Oakwell Stadium on Tuesday night.

Nade scored the only goal of a keenly-contested contest midway through the second-half when he latched on to a loose ball before hitting a rising, angled drive into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

However, the French striker undid all his good work when he was dismissed in the closing stages for striking an opponent in retaliation.

United fielded the likes of Stephen Quinn, Ahmed Fathi, Evan Horwood and Ian Ross in their side in this Pontins Holidays League East Division clash against a young and enthusiastic Barnsley outfit.

The Blades, who dominated the vast majority of the game, carved open several chances throughout the match although lacked a cutting edge to add to Nade's goal.

Quinn missed an opportunity to extend the visitors' lead when he saw a penalty saved. The spot-kick was awarded after Nade's weak shot was turned off the goal line and Quinn was dragged down in the box as he looked to pounce on the rebound.

Kerry was forced off with an ankle injury on the hour-mark and was replaced by Binnion and, with 15 minutes remaining, Oliver's snap shot from just inside the box fizzed wide before Nade's powerful drive went narrowly over the top.

Coach Ron Reid said: "It was pleasing to go to Oakwell and win, although there were disappointments on the night.

"Nade's lack of discipline was disappointing and the fact that we didn't convert numerous chances was also a negative point. It was a bad foul on Lloyd Kerry and he will be out for a few weeks with ankle ligament damage."

The Blades' Reserves are next in action, on Wednesday 5 September, at Rotherham United in the Pontins Holidays League Cup.

Blades Reserves: Gerrard, Ross, Naughton, Kerry (Binnion 60), Seck, Horwood, Fathi, S. Quinn, Nade, Oliver, Donnelly. Unused: Annerson, Lowton, Eagers, Abdi.
