James cost United a club record fee of £4million in the summer of 2007.
He began his career at Blackburn Rovers, before making a £1million switch to Southampton where he made over 200 appearances.
In the 2002-03 campaign, he scored 23 league goals - the highest English goalscorer in the Premiership that season.
The powerful striker won the first of five England caps in the 3-1 defeat to Australia.
A £6 million switch to Everton followed, where he was the club's top marksman with 11 goals in the 2005-06 season.
