Legend Pele has spoken of the "beautiful welcome" he received on his three day visit to Sheffield United.

"It was very emotional and special," said the most famous name in football as he left the country.

"I loved the reception I received from the fans at Bramall Lane for the Sheffield FC match against Inter Milan. It was a beautiful welcome and something that I did not expect, especially as I have not played for 35 years!"

Pele made the unique trip to Sheffield United as part of United's new links with Brazilian giants Sao Paulo Football Club. For the last 12 months the Blades have been working up a cooperation agreement with Sao Paulo and, in the final stages of negotiation, it has generated significant interest from Pele.

"We feel like brothers. The links with Sheffield United have made us very close," added Pele who carried out a number of engagements at the club including the official opening of Sheffield FC's exhibition to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The exhibition, at the Legends of the Lane venue, features the original hand written rules of football.

Praising Sheffield FC, the world's oldest club, Pele said: "Sheffield FC have been an example for us all. They have a big responsibility and must keep going."

Sheffield United director Simon McCabe, who masterminded Pele's trip to United, said: "The reaction to Pele's visit has been remarkable. He is an outstanding ambassador for football and we were delighted he took so much interest in Sheffield United and took time out to meet so many people during his visit."
