James Beattie sparked a Blades revival as the unbeaten home start to the season continued in a tough battle with Wolves.
Beattie netted twice, including a penalty which he won, as United fought back from a half-time deficit to claim three valuable Championship points.
Stephen Elliott gave Wolves the lead and after Beattie's double, substitute Jon Stead put the icing on the cake for the Blades.
The defeat at Scunthorpe, combined with the injury to Montgomery and Geary's suspension, forced Bryan Robson into making three changes with Naysmith, Webber and Stephen Quinn named in the starting line-up.
Before kick-off there was a prolonged period of applause by both sets of players, officials and fans in memory of Ian Porterfield, who passed away in midweek.
It was quickly evident that Armstrong was partnering Tonge in central midfield and both were in early action against Olofinjana. It was Armstrong who had the first serious effort on goal, on nine minutes. United kept the ball well and bombarded Wolves with crosses before Armstrong struck over a half-volley from a central position on the edge of the box.
Then Morgan attempted an overhead kick after Beattie flicked on Bromby's throw as United looked the brighter of the two teams. Webber curled wide on 12 minutes and Gillespie struck a half-volley into the arms of Hennessey.
Webber smashed a 14th minute left-footed first-time effort over as the Wolves defence continued to be overworked, whilst the visiting side's first attempt - on 15 minutes - was a breakaway effort which Stephen Ward fired wide.
On 18 minutes the Blades crowd were on their feet in anticipation. Gillespie won a corner he had no right to win and delivered to the back post. Quinn retrieved and sent over deep cross which Kilgallon headed against the face of the crossbar, then Webber turned the rebound, from a narrow angle, wide.
From another United corner, a moment later, Wolves attempted another breakaway. Armstrong and Naysmith worked hard to slow the visitors down before Kightly drilled across the goal and wide.
United's impressive start, however, was undone on 24 minutes, partially by the referee. Firstly, Mr Oliver failed to spot a clear Blades throw and then penalised Kilgallon for a debatable foul. Foley took a quick free-kick to Kightly and after Stephen Ward's shot was parried by Kenny, ELLIOTT followed in to lift the rebound into the roof of the net.
The goal silenced the United crowd for a while and on the pitch the home players failed to replicate the early promise. On 38 minutes Keogh beat Kilgallon in the air and received the ball back from Elliott before firing wide.
Beattie appealed vociferously on 41 minutes when his knock down from Quinn's cross hit Breen but the referee was unconvinced and the visiting defence held firm until the break.
There was another penalty appeal early in the second half when Armstrong went down under a challenge on the edge of the box, following a Bromby throw. United again started well, although Keogh struck a 20-yard shot into the side-netting on 51 minutes.
United's hard work was finally rewarded on 57 minutes, albeit with a slice of help from the visiting defence. Bromby's hopeful forward ball caused a mix-up between goalkeeper Hennessey and Darren Ward, allowing BEATTIE to bravely put his head between them and make contact with the ball. As the goalkeeper, defender and striker laid in a heap in the penalty area, the ball trickled over the line as the Kop end willed it in.
United's third shout for a penalty was turned down on 67 minutes as Stead, just on as a substitute, was bundled over by Breen as he attempted to make contact with Quinn's cross.
Breen was involved again on 71 minutes, delivering a free-kick for Keogh but the striker was unable to make a great connection in a difficult situation and Kenny smothered.
Wolves fans will wonder how they did not regain the lead on 75 minutes following a Kightly free-kick. Breen headed back into the danger area and with Kenny on the ground, Darren Ward headed against the crossbar from two yards and saw his follow up effort blocked by a crowd of United defenders.
United went back on the attack and Beattie's flick on created a chance for Stead but after stepping inside Collins the shot was weak and comfortably saved by Hennessey.
However, a case of fourth time lucky gave United the initiative. Another mix-up with Hennessey caused Wolves problems and as Beattie looked to capitalise, he was pulled back by Breen. Referee Oliver looked long and hard before finally giving United a penalty at the fourth time of asking. BEATTIE took responsibility and beat Hennessey from the spot, firing to the goalkeeper's left.
Beattie looked for a third but his 30-yard free-kick was over and, as the 90-minute mark approached, he turned Collins but saw his shot saved by Hennessey's legs.
In injury-time Wolves still looked dangerous and Olofinjana fired into Kenny's mid-riff. From a deep Ward free-kick, Morgan's clearing header hit Collins and flew just wide.
From the resulting long goal-kick by Kenny, Beattie turned provider, flicking on for STEAD to race through the exposed defence and beat Hennessey, although the goalkeeper did get something on the ball.
The goal came in the third and final of injury-time and allowed the celebrations to begin.
