Great day out
Earthquake victims in China were remembered during an event packed Community Day at Bramall Lane on Sunday as the Chinese Community Group held a bucket collection for the casualties in Sichuan Province where our sister club, Chengdu Blades, is situated.
The day began with the return of cricket to Bramall Lane as an SUFC XI took on a Sheffield Friends team which batted first and managed a score of 161 for 6.
United struggled to 28 for 5, despite Tony Currie and Ted Hemsley being in the side, and eventually fell to 79 all out (Todd,18, and Littlejohn, 19, top scoring), which was a feather in the cap for the Sheffield Friends and a great way to engage with cricket fans from the diverse community of Sharrow.
When the pitch was cleared for football, over 25 teams took part in a six-a-side tournament, and winning teams emerged as Darnall beat The Hub (U17s), Yemini Dynamos and Sound Boys contested the U14 final, Street Strikers and Streetworkz played each other in the U12 final, and
in the U12 girls final Wybourn Community Primary beat Carfield B.
In addition, two teams from the Kickz project based at Mount Pleasant Park - which the Blades support - also entered the U14 and U17 boy's competitions.
Other activities on the day included:
WSA Cheerleaders; Sheffield Sharks' Basketball Hoop which was supporting the British Transplant Games who were also represented; martial arts and boxing displays; dancing displays from Studio Dance Break-Dancers and Nycha Contemporary Dance Group; music in the Platinum Suite by DJ Chill Out; Street Kick; Bouncy Castle; Surestart; face painters and circus and balloon artist; Rhyme and Reason bookstall and author Tom Palmer signing copies of his book 'Foul Football'; SY Fire and Rescue crews; PA Mike Shaft from the Sheffield Sharks.
Sheffield United had a number of stalls to promote the facilities, events and the range of work the Club is involved with, as did community partners FURD, REACT, Sheffield Stop Smoking Service, Sheffield Hallam University, Ship Shape Shop, Sharrow Community Forum, The Hub Youth Project and SY Police.
Other contributions included henna painting, hair braiding and head massage, whilst a range of food demonstrating the diversity of the Sharrow ward was available, including Chinese, Asian and African-Caribbean.
The film 'Sharrow to Soweto' was also premiered on a day that was enjoyed by hundreds, and which showed the commitment of the Blades and their partners to put on the most ambitious programme of events so far for the community.
