An experienced coach, Sam arrived at Bramall Lane with Kevin Blackwell in February 2008, having acted as his assistant at both Leeds United and Luton Town.

As a player, Sam was a commanding central defender with Sheffield Wednesday, where he played un the FA Cup Final as a teenager, Mansfield Town, Lincoln City and Watford. It was whilst he was with the Hornets that he began his coaching career.

He has managed Blackpool, for seven years, and Bury, whilst has also held down coaching positions at Manchester City and Burnley.
